Twenty riders gathered this morning at the trailhead to the Wabash Trace Natural Trail in Council Bluffs to begin the annual RAGBRAI Route Inspection Ride. This 442-mile fact finding mission will take place this week, ending at the Mississippi River in Burlington on Saturday, June 6.
Don't look now, but it is June already and RAGBRAI is next month! Yikes! I hope you are well are your way to getting in shape for this epic tour across Iowa. However, if you have just started riding or haven't done as much as you hoped or planned to by this point, don't fear.
The Route Inspection Ride team arrived in Council Bluffs this afternoon and checked out the impressive Bob Kerrey Pedestrian bridge that crosses the Missouri River connecting Council Bluffs, Iowa and Omaha, Nebraska.
With just 50 days to go until RAGBRAI, the eight RAGBRAI Overnight Host Town Committees came to Des Moines for a planning workshop. Close to 50 leaders from Council Bluffs, Red Oak, Greenfield, Indianola, Chariton, Ottumwa, Mount Pleasant and Burlington shared their experiences and networked with their fellow host committees.
I did something today that I don't usually do. I headed out for a ride in the rain. You see, it's been kind of a rainy spring here in Iowa and if I didn't get my ride in this morning it wasn't going to happen at all.
The Dream Team, a grass roots organization that has been training youth to participate in RAGBRAI since 1997, is going strong this year with 44 young riders (17 young women, 27 young men) and 30 mentors.
There really is only one good way to inspect the selected roads for a bike event... get out and ride it on a bike! And that is exactly what we are going to do with a team of knowledgeable cyclists thoroughly examining every mile of the RAGBRAI route on bicycles.
