The Northwest Rotary Club in Des Moines is sponsoring a charity bicycle ride commemorating the life of Charles Gabus on Sunday, July 5. Rides of 5, 18, 30, and 60 miles are among the day's activities.

As the summer biking season in Iowa approaches and interest spurs regarding the RAGBRAI route, participants begin to think about getting in shape. Articles appear regarding conditioning, appropriate apparel, proper gear, and tuned up bikes. Bike shops throughout Iowa begin to encourage riders to get those bikes into top-notch condition. Another aspect I feel is just or maybe even more important is SAFETY.

Hydration is a critical issue for RAGBRAI. RAGBRAI occurs during the hottest time of year here in Iowa and it’s important that you maintain a constant fluid intact. Even before I start this I can hear the comments about ‘drinking’. Well, sorry to burst your bubble but I’m going to follow the straight and narrow here and talk about non-alcoholic fluid intake.
