How can RAGBRAI claim to be the longest touring event? Do brevets not count? Paris-Brest-Paris is both older (1891) and longer (1200 km, aroung 745 mi).

  2. Ferrari says:

I think they mean longest running tour, as in how long it’s been put on, not mileage. :)

  3. Ferrari says:

Since PBP is longer running, they might mean in the USA.

  4. Wheat says:

I usually like every Ragbrai jersey, but this one looks like an ad for a fried chicken restaurant..

From About RAGBRAI above: “Heading into its 38th year, RAGBRAI is the oldest, largest and longest bicycle touring event in the world”. Oldest at 38 years, largest at 10,000 plus participants and longest at 450 to 550 miles. PBP has maybe 5,000 participants, don’t know the mileage.
I really like fried chicken. I think the jersey would look good on me.

  6. Avatar of Tony Tony says:

The PBP is a highly controlled and regulated Randonneuring event. It is a competitive event. In the sense you have to meet check in times and are riding against the clock. Riders have to qualify and be members of recognized clubs or organizations. Bikes have to meet strict standards and are inspected. Its far from a leisure ride. Unless you think riding 750 miles in under 80-90 hours as leisurely. To qualify. You must complete a 200k, 300k, 400k, and 600k brevet with in the year prior to the PBP. Those brevets must also be sanctioned by the ACP. So as a leisure ride. The DMR is justifies to take its clam.

I can’t wait to sport this jersey. The hidden designs remind me of the 2003 jersey. Which is one of my favorites.

  7. Mandy says:

This jersey is absolutely FUGLY! I agree with Wheat saying it looks like an ad for a fried chicken restaurant…i like the colors, but what’s with the rooster!?!?!?!?!

  8. bob says:

dude – it’s Iowa – of course it has to have a chicken. duh.

  9. Windmillgirl says:

Hey, it’s a weather vane brain surgeons.

  10. I like the background, cool detail. Wouldn’t you rather help the Peanut Butter Jam for a day and get a free jersey though? :) We’re working on the 2010 jerseys and they’re going to be good! We still have some spots open for volunteers so keep spreading the Peanut Butter Jam love.

Windmillgirl hit it out of the ballpark. It is a weather vane! Chickens…Iowa…of course. Iowa is the nation’s leading egg producer…twice as many laying hens as the nearest state, Ohio. That’s a lota cluckers.

  12. Jan says:

I’ve waited 50 years to ride ragbrai and THIS is the Jersey?! how sad :(

  13. Joy says:

Time and talents created a shirt to link with the ride and reflect its special Iowa home. Anyone with suggestions for designs should volunteer to work on a commitee welcoming the riders, volunteer time and talents to a shirt design for the total ride or for a host community. I’m planning to give this shirt, which I like, as a gift to one special host community volunteer.

I like the jersey. It has to be tough to come up with a new one every year.

Regarding PBP vs. RAGBRAI: Having done both rides, the key difference is that RAGBRAI is a tour at a leisurely pace. Tony’s comments are right on–I certainly didn’t think I was “touring” France when I rode PBP in 2007–761 miles in 88 hours is not a “tour” in my opinion. Although I loved the experience and plan to go back in 2011, it’s a long, hard, slog of a ride. Another key difference is that RAGBRAI is yearly whereas PBP happens every 4 years (10 year interval in the early days, 1891, 1901, 1911, etc.) and there was a break during WWII. So there have only been 16 PBPs vs. 38 RAGs.

  15. Sandaltan says:

My hat is off to you Jerry! A great cycling accomplishment in very wet and ugly conditions I understand.
Jan: The ride is not all about the jersey so don’t be sad. Besides I think the jersey is quite slimming.

  16. Gary says:

I’m from Arkansas, the chicken/weather vane theme is fine with me. What would you rather have…a picture of smog hanging over the hills near LA?

  17. Avatar of DaveM DaveM says:

LOL, some of your comments about the chicken and weather vane are great. HA. Personally, I kind of like it, but I’ve been wanting something with Orange, so I’ll probably spring for one this year.

And Jan, come on, you have been waiting 50 years? Now you don’t look a day over 40. :) I think you will look great with Orange and Blue. :)

  18. Todd F says:

    I’ve Ordered Mine~!~! Oooorah

  19. Shanna Drew says:

I am so sorry to the person who designed this, but it is a truly lazy, ugly design that does not in any way say “Iowa” or “RAGBRAI” to me. What I get from this is that Kentucky Fried Chicken has had an accident with the Denver Broncos.

Remember when Iowa had like a 4-leaf clover symbol? Something retro like that would be nice to incorporate, or a design that illustrates the terrain a little, or bicycles… you had a lot of choices other than to ripoff the Broncos design and add a rooster. Also, you cannot represent an Iowa summer without the color GREEN in there somewhere, which happens to go great with orange, as Ralph Lauren knows.

I think try again. I would never wear this.

  20. Rindy Stalley says:

Personally, I think this years jersey looks fine. And the cloverleaf? Not so sure about that. Cloverleaf could stand for anything, not just Iowa. A design that actually came to my mind would be to incorporate an ear of corn wearin shades on the back and make the jersey green and white. Not sure about the rest of the design though, it just an idea that popped into my head.
