Great advice from a veteran to a newbie who wants to be prepared. Tell me about the duffle bag. Like I assume it’s rain proof & where did you get it? Thanks Jo
I use a giant duffle bag that is not rain proof BUT I pack all of my clothes inside the duffel bag in a big black plastic garbage bag (or two) which I seal tightly every morning- it acts as a make-shift waterproof lining. Extra garbage bags are key…
As for where my tent goes: I personally am a light packer so I can fit my pillow, a light bed roll, and tent inside my duffel (it lays on top of the sealed plastic bag holding all of my clothes). Some people just strap their tent really tightly to the outside of their bag but I don’t want to run any risk of it getting separated. I hope that helps!
I pack each outfit in a 2.5 gallon ziploc bag, that way if your bag has an encounter with water your stuff stays dry.
As for the tent, I wouldn’t recommend packing it in your duffel bag. It will likely be wet every morning (either from rain or dew) and putting a wet tent in your duffel bag is inviting water to come mingle with your dry clothing even if you have it all packed in a water tight bag.
RAGBRAI®, The Register’s Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa, is an annual seven-day bicycle ride across the state.
RAGBRAI will celebrate 40 years of riding in 2012 and is the oldest, largest and longest touring bicycle ride in the world. Des Moines Register Media has been the title sponsor of RAGBRAI since 1973.

What a great idea! Thank you for this…simple but effective!
