There really is only one good way to inspect the selected roads for a bike event… get out and ride it on a bike! And that is exactly what we are going to do with a team of knowledgeable cyclists thoroughly examining every mile of the RAGBRAI route on bicycles.
While you are grilling outdoors after that RAGBRAI-training bike ride, let’s remember the true meaning of Memorial Day. Memorial Day commemorates our country’s men and women who died while serving in the military.
We hope everyone has a safe and enjoyable bike ride to work!
If you have committed to riding RAGBRAI this year, it all starts with Tip #1, the RIGHT stuff. And when I say stuff, I mean bicycle.
Like bikes? Great. Like art? Great. Like ‘em both? Even better. The second annual Artcrank poster show opens this Thursday at the Des Moines Social Club, in the Kirkwood Building.
If you’ve read my earlier article on the amount of climbing on this year’s RAGBRAI, or if you've looked at the profile, you will realize there aren’t long, long climbs, but there is a lot of overall climbing. That climbing comes a quarter or a half mile at a time. The hills in Iowa are short but they can be frequent especially on the first couple of days. These can cause challenges for riders both going up and coming down.
Benson, the longtime RAGBRAI leader who died Sunday at age 82, will always be remembered as the logistics man for the first 19 RAGBRAIs. But plotting cross-state routes, coordinating with municipalities and shouting "Take no prisoners!" to begin each ride are only the Nebraska native's most prominent contributions to the annual event.
Don Benson of Clive passed away last Sunday at the age of 82.
Wishing all of the Moms a very Happy Mother's Day.
Enjoy your special day!
