Fun article to read and it highlights the wonderful pie and church dinners. However, this will be the 6th year in a row that I have done RAGBRAI and I have noticed over the years that the food that is available for riders is not the most nutritious. There is a notable lack of fresh vegetables among the vendors and at the community dinners. If you find a salads, it is usually made mostly of pale iceberg lettuce with a tomato slice and a few grated carrots sprinkled in. Whole wheat bread is sometimes difficult to find. Riders need food that is nutritious food, not just pies, pork and corn in overabundance. Just food for thought….

Jim,.
Jim,
The entire purpose of RAGBRAI is to experience the “wonderfulness” of the Midwest, i.e. wonderful hospitality, terrific community spirit, 500 miles of cornfields, hills, sunscreen and great food with total disregard to what is nutritional or good for you. It wouldn’t be RAGBRAI without a MR. Porkchop pork chop, homemade pie every day, corn smothered in butter and anything else that looks good that unless it was RAGBRAI is would never even consider.
Loosen up and enjoy a truly unique, wonderful experience….you’ll be glad you did!

@Jim – I would tend to disagree some with your comments on the food selection. As a pass-through town coordinator for 2011, we had vendors that did provide healthier options, including lean proteins and fruits/vegetables. We also recommended it as a selling option for local fund raisers as it is easy to sell and prepare. You may not be able to find the larger serving salad you are accustomed to the other days of the year, but yes, embrace the food and selection of the ride for those 7 days
Enjoy 2012!

Glad to see my comment regarding healthy eating has drawn some support. Don’t get me wrong. I am not against enjoying the wonderfulness of the Midwest – during my years on RAGBRAI I’ve had pie, plain and ala mode, Mr. Pork Chop, and buttered smothered corn. It would just be nice to have more vegetables on the trail to us balance things out. Balance after all is an important part of biking, is it not? And besides w/out my veggies how am I take first place in RAGBRAI?
