RAGBRAI 2012: Family of four finally rides four bikes
Sun, Jul 22, 2012 | by Kyle Munson
ShareSunday, July 22 (Day 1) — While standing in downtown Orange City I overheard Sean Drucker from Madison, Wis., encouraging his son after the morning’s bike ride out of Sioux Center.
“You’re doing great, Gavin! We went 10 miles already.”
Not to mention that the son averaged more miles per hour (12) than his age (9).
The entire Drucker family was along for the trek: mother Katie and daughter Gabby, 11, rolling with the boys.
Both kids began their RAGBRAI lives zipped into in a Burley trailer before graduating to a tag-along bike extension. And now this is the first year with all four Drucker family members on their own bikes.
The kids were riding half days, mostly, but Gabby thought she might push herself to complete a full day later this week.
If you’ve ever been on RAGBRAI, you know that one of the familiar sights is an elementary schoolkid with his or her head slumped onto the handlebars while pedaling on a tandem behind mom or dad.
There was a girl biking in the back seat of a low-slung tandem today who munched a cinnamon roll while pedaling. As I passed, I made a crack about how while texting while driving is a no-no, this particular RAGBRAI multi-tasking on the road seemed to be OK since she wasn’t steering.
