RAGBRAI 2012: Marshalltown weathers storm without injuries, damage

MARSHALLTOWN, Ia. – Though last night’s storm ruined the town’s planned activities, Marshalltown weathered it without serious injuries or damage, Police Chief Mike Tupper said this morning.

One rider who fell was taken to the Marshalltown Medical and Surgical Center for treatment, Tupper said. The injury, however, came after the storm, he said.

Tupper said he toured much of the town this morning, and saw no serious damage.

For many of the people who sought shelter from the city’s Veterans Memorial Coliseum, a shuttle bus arrived around 7 a.m. to return them to their campsites at Riverview Park.

While the coliseum offered dry shelter, waiting for the shuttle caused some delay for riders accustomed to an earlier start.

“We’re normally on the road,” said Annette Roth, a rider from Des Moines. “It’s getting close.”

In the campground, others riders spent the morning tearing down wet tents, some wringing out wet clothing and gear.

Iowa City resident Austin Davis, 28, said everything he had in the tent he shares with his wife, Mary Davis, 29, was wet. While his wife wrung out clothing, Davis packed his bag with gear.

“I’m carrying everything, so it’s going to be a little heavier today,” he said.

When the wind came up and rain began to fall last night, her husband and a friend were at a gas station buying drinks, Mary Davis said. She was laying in the tent, and when it fell, she held it up with her feet to keep things dry as possible, she said.

While campers this morning were mostly torn down, Davis said she saw many fallen tents, including one that had been blown into a small pond in the park.

I hosted 19 riders and support people in my back yard here in Marshalltown and we had a wonderful time. I enjoyed meeting people from Minnasota, California, Virginia and North Carolina.
They enjoyed the Ice Water and Lemonade I had waiting for them and the water mister that surounds my covered deck. We visited for awhile while they took turns showering and cleaning up then I cooked Bugers and Sweet Corn for them and they added the rest we ate and visited, sipped a couple cold ones until about 10pm when they went to bed. Then this morning when they awoke I had coffee and donuts waiting. I enjoyed it so much I hated to see them leave this morning but I think I made some friends I will stay in contact with.
