Des Moines’ RAGBRAI logo pays tribute to spandex

The City of Des Moines’ RAGBRAI logo pays tribute to many riders’ favorite apparel, spandex.

The theme, “Des Moines: Even Better in Spandex!” was unveiled this morning.

Raygun, a popular Des Moines store known for its witty T-shirts, made the design. Shirts with the tagline and the logo – the Des Moines skyline with a giant bicycle wheel behind it like a sunrise – will go on sale at the East Village store Friday. T-shirts will be $20, and for $10 cyclists can have the logo printed on their own jerseys.

The theme replaces one announced earlier this month that had to be withdrawn because it included the RAGBRAI name, which is trademarked and not available for use by cities on commercial items.

Des Moines is hosting riders overnight on Tuesday, July 23, the third day of the weeklong bike ride across the state. RAGBRAI draws about 10,000 cyclists each summer and organizers estimate that number could swell to more than 30,000 as it makes its way through central Iowa midweek.
