RAGBRAI winds down in Des Moines without major incidents

By midnight, Court Avenue looked like a typical Saturday night scene-partiers in branded T-shirts strolled between bars, with some spandex-clad riders peppered among them.

An empty trolley offering rides to Club Extreme’s Foam Party drove up and down the avenue looking for takers.

Police, stationed on every corner, pet dogs, ate ice cream bars and talked on cell phones. Firefighters sat with their legs dangling, three to a fire truck fender. Officers said there were no public safety issues of any concern.

Inside the gate of the bridges, some vendors were still breaking down their booths while others left four-packs of Sutter Home mini bottles and cases Coca-Cola unattended.

Howard Johnston, owner of On Point Security Group, said the night went without incident, other than a moment after the show when a woman on the tear down crew slipped and fell from the stage. She received non-emergency medical attention.

Otherwise, it was a fairly tame night, Johnston said.

“With the RAGBRAI crowd, they like to party, but they’re not the type of people that like to party and get into fights,” Johnston said. “Everyone wants to have fun.”
