i did ragbrai last year without a lock but this year i have a different, and expensive bike:-) i’m not riding with anyone that can watch my bike while i eat/pee/shop watch bands etc.
they don’t make my bike any more; it is very small and if it gets stolen i cannot get another one.
i hate to be paranoid but i looooove my bike!
you may personal write me at blueponystudio at the googly mail place. that is secret code please don’t let a spammer get it- i trust you are bright enough to figure it out:-)
thank you see you SOON!

I’ve been doing RAGBRAI since 94. I have never locked the bike and never had a problem. But if it is going to cause stress and worry, spend the $30, lock it up and enjoy the circus without a concern.

I’ll be bringing a four foot cable with padlock. It doesnt weigh much and fits in my underseat panniers. And now I lock up my recumbent and dont worry too much.

During day while on route: NEVER USED A LOCK
At night: IF BIKE LEFT OUTSIDE – ALWAYS
Better safe than sorry.
No worries during day. I have left my ID, credit cards, cash, cell phone, etc. on my bike and never worried – not once. Year number 5 on RAGBRAI.

No lock for me. I just park my relatively inexpensive bike next something high-zoot and unlocked. If it’s not immediately identifiable as easily sold for a high price, like a 56 cm top-of-the-line TREK, then don’t worry about it.

During the day no.
In marshalltown and cedar rapids if its left outside o would lock it up.
Could use something light like a gun lock or handcuffs, there was a whole thread somewhere about locking up

I would lock it if the general public (non bike riding and support crowd) has access to your bike..like outside a supermarket in a bigger city ..

If you left a $20 on your seat, then came back an hour later it would still be there. If it wasn’t, you would need to look on the ground because the wind probably blew it off.
Lock it if it makes you feel better. I prefer to leave the good bike at home.

I have ridden a Team ONCE (full Campy Record), a recumbent tandem, and a stretched cruiser among others. I have never locked my bike during the day, but I generally do at night. Your mileage may very.

When I emailed info@ragbrai, they suggested bringing a lock. They said it was unlikely, but they have had cases of stolen bikes. Better safe than sorry, I say.
