The eating and drinking part of training for RAGBRAI are going well. However; we are behind last year in the miles pedaled category, she is at 900 and I am behind that. Gonna tell ya about Preston sometime, he had nearly 15K last year and over 9K the year before. When Preston goes by it is a whooosh and a blur. When he is not biking he races sail boats…energy unlimited!!
RIDE RIGHT

ST, I totally agree with your training routine! Right now I’m concentrating on pie and Budweiser, not necessarily in that order!!!
RAGBRAI rookie. First Post.
I plan to ride about 1000 miles before the middle of July, including one century ride with about 3000 feet of climbing.
I try to get atleast 2000 in before Ragbrai. I count miles on the trainer and road miles. The last week before Ragbrai I do cut back. Last year I put in 2,500 and felt good. I am a wimp and do not ride outside. Southern New jersey is flat so I do look for hills in Eastern Pennsylvania. Have FUN
I will start training in April or May depending on the weather. I usually do 600-1000 miles to get ready. We ail be painting our house this summer so it might be closer to 500 this year.
Oh, well, as long as my seat is broken in I will be fine. Now I am focusing on running -planning on doing my first 5K in May.
For me – the main thing is to build back up to a 60 mile day before Ragbrai – and be sure to put in at least three 30 mile days each week. I want to be riding 5 days a week in the three weeks before Ragbrai (keep in mind – I have a golf schedule to keep!!!!!!) – but my butt has to be ready, and my legs need to be ready.
Recommended by most is 900 miles minimum. I only had 400 last year before Regabrai – should have been twice that at least, so I think the 900 number is a good one. Everyone who is over 1000 will be riding 25% faster than you!
And then, there are the “animals” who take the hill at 24 mph (in a line) while I’m huffing up it at 11………
right now I’m hoping for 1000. I wont be riding the last day (Hubby has to work that monday and we have a 2 day drive back to Jersey). So that is one day I wont have to worry about. Oh and I count every single mile whether it be indoor or outdoor. It all counts. The whole goal of this was to make me healthier and to get enjoy myself. I’ve already lost 6.5lbs in the last two weeks and went from crying and begging to get off exercise bike after only 8 minutes to pumping and grooving for 30 minutes…that’s in only 2 weeks! Imagine how I’ll be in 5 months!

Wow! You’re a great example!! Congrats!
I’ll take what the good Lord will give me. Hopefully I can get in 1,000 miles or more, with lots’ of hill and headwind riding. The more you put into your riding now, the more you’ll get out of it later. In my past, it was not uncommon for me to have 2500 to 3000 before RAGBRAI. Life sometimes gets’ in the way.
I’m 63 and still working full time. And I live in Minnesota. We just had a heavy snowfall last night. I will have in about 1100 miles not counting time on the trainer.
