I’m an experienced RAGBRAI rider recently diagnosed with a gluten allergy. Is anyone else gluten free and what do you do to avoid gluten at RAGBRAI?

I have ridden Ragbrai with several people who had Celiac disease. They brought some gluten free carbs with them (look for Lara Bars for instance). But, they also found plenty to eat on the route. Smoothies are a great energy food and they are available all along the route. Fruits (particularly bananas) are a good source of carbs. Corn is also frequently available. The biggest problem has been beer – all standard beers contain at least small amounts of gluten. There are gluten free beers (google for them), but they won’t be available on the route. One of our riders has brought his own for a post-ride treat. But he doesn’t like it very much. Also, watch out for Cola’s of any type. The caramel coloring in colas usually contains gluten.

Stock up on Hemp seed snacks. They are a wonderful protein source and healthy fat, also great fiber. You will have to eat the meats without the buns or on a stick.

I run The Spice Rack in Cherokee (222 W Main St, I’ll be right around the corner from the food vendors). I’ll be making delish salads (LOTS of veggies on leafy greens) that should work well for you. Some with garbanzos and almonds for protein, others with egg and cheese for protein. None topped with croutons, so all will be gluten free. Stop by and see us!

I am writing a live food and travel blog while riding RAGBRAI this year and would love to have people tweet me if they find gluten free options along the ride each day at @mamacaruso1 or text me at 507 219 0912 Look for a month of gluten free recipes and alternatives in August at http://www.mamacarusocooks.blogspot.com Right now I am working on a few interviews with ultra-marathoners and tri-athletes about the impact of gluten free on their training and competition and if any RAGBRAI riders who are riding gluten free would like to be interviewed – tweet or text and I will schedule a time to find you in the host town…or along the ride. Looking forward to learning about gluten free options on RAGBRAI…and Judi…I will certainly stop by the Spice Rack – thanks for posting the address! And, bikebunny…thanks for asking the question!

I don’t think I’ve ever seen Carbo Hut – are they on the route or in the towns? I’ve never been looking, but this yuear we have several gluten free riders on our family team and so I thought it made sense to write about it too as we learn…thanks for any info you can give me about how to find Carbo Hut. @mamacaruso1

Hello riders! I hope you are all getting as geared up as we are at Carbo Hut for this coming weekend! As far as this post goes, we do offer gluten free options (although you may not find a gluten-free “meal” every day). Every day we offer gluten-free, fresh fruit smoothies and we always offer your choice of a pasta bowl (not gluten-free) or a brown rice bowl (gluten-free) with your choice of topping (vegetarian or meat) every day there is a different meal but the pasta/rice/smoothies remain a constant. As previously mentioned, these meals will not always be gluten-free so you will just have to ask. If, for some reason, one day our meal of the day is not gluten free, you will always be able to get a gluten-free smoothie. Unlike some smoothie vendors, we NEVER use syrup and we ALWAYS use fresh fruit, 100% fruit juice and ice (with the option of adding whey protein). There will be a few additions to our menu from last year, these will come as a surprise to all and will hopefully satisfy your every desire! We look forward to meeting you all and helping you all out along the way!
Ride on!

Each day will be a different meal. Our Gluten free days will be day 1 in Marcus, day 3 in Farnhamville, day 4 in Story City, day 5 in Vinton, and day 7 in Lost Nation.
When I say gluten free, I mean, you have to stay away from the noodles of course… ask for rice instead. And some days (not all) I saute the tofu in soy sauce and was unable to get gluten free soy sauce in bulk, so ask.
We are busy as bees getting things packed up and are looking forward to seeing you all in a couple of days!
