  • Well I have waited just about long enough. This Sunday I am headed to Slater to ride the high trestle trail. My plan is Slater-> Woodward->Ankeny and then back to pick up my car.

The weather looks like it should be good. What are some of the best sights to see along the way?

    Suggestions welcome!!

  • Sights other than the bridge? Between Slater snd Sheldahl is Hobo Junction and a stand of timber (catalba trees?) supposadly planted by the rr for a source of rail ties someday. Brewpub in Ankeny about a block past the end of the trail. Nite Hawk bar on trail in Slater and Take Down downtown. Madrid has the Flat Tire right on the trail, kind of a small RAGBRAI there most weekends. VFW and a couplr resturants uptown. Trai between 17 and firdt tunnel. Woodward has new bar Whislin Donkey just off trail. Mr. C’s and a couple resturants downtown. Watch stop signs esp between Ankeny and Slater. Also crossing 210 and 17 in Madrid. Couple others kind of hardto see unless the corn has been picked.Violet is another crossing that may be busy, Snus Hill Winery is about 1 mile up the gravel road and they have sunday afternoon music.

  • You will find plenty of places for food and drink, more than you can possibly visit in one day. However; one more option is the Tiger Bowl in Madrid which has a good breaded pork tenderloin, not thin and flat but thick and moist. Have a great ride, I know you will enjoy the view from the bridge.

    RIDE RIGHT

  • oh no, I forgoy Cyannes in Woodward and Baldy’s and the Tiger Bowl in Madrid. So that makes 2 places to visit ecah time through Madrid. Okay, I can stop for one, but then I really have to go.

  • One of my free lance food scouts told me Saturday that the Night Hawk serves a “great” breaded pork tenderloin. That BPT is on my short list for sure.

    RIDE RIGHT

  • one idiot almost became a hood ornament when he decided to blow a stop sign sown by the Oasis on Sunday. Saw 1 horse and buggy and it must be getting close to winter because Jeri was out on her roller ski’s.

  • I plan to hit the HTT in a couple weeks, saw the bridge and some of it last year when the route went near it. Love the Flat Tire. Since I will be laid off from my job for 6 weeks I am also hoping to explore some other trails when I am down in that area. What others are a good ride?

  • I would check out the Des Moines Bike Collective site http://dsmbikecollective.org/mapcentral .

The Neal Smith Trail is the closest to the HHT. As long as you stay between Cottonwood, south of the Saylorville dam, and Big Creek State Park dam, you should have good riding.

Some of the other sections, especially from south of Cottonwod to Des Moines are in serious need of repair.

  • It’s a ways away from the HTT but I believe it’s worth checking out. The Trout Run Trail in Decorah, IA. It’s only 11-12 miles but you could do the loop a few times, different directions. Alittle hilly through the countryside but absolutely beautiful scenery….I love this trail as well as the HTT…
