And Nissan announced last year that ‘steer-by-wire’ technology could appear in select Infiniti models in 2013 (that’s *NOW*, people!) ‘Steer-by-wire’ means that there is no physical connection between the steering wheel and the front wheels; sensors and actuators move the wheels in response to electrical signals created by turning the steering wheel. Yes, I know this technology has been used in aircraft and ships for years, but remember too that most ships and airplanes are either rigorously maintained by a staff of skilled experts, or are not generally used in close proximity to other people. Can’t say that about most cars on the road today.
The concept of ‘radar warning’ of obstructions on the road is nice, but the more we as a society depend upon technology to augment or replace our own abilities, the larger will be the calamity when that technology eventually fails — as it undoubtedly will.
