I am struggling with the idea of driving from CA to Iowa. The desert drive will be really hot… We have an RV…I have my pass – I am ready to ride the Look 566…My wife is going to assist with driving – I am worried about my six yr. old son. I guess I need motivation that this will be a positive experience. Please do not call me any female names…I am really struggling. Yes, this will be my first time..and the team I was going to ride with has disbanded..
I don’t have kids, but this will be my 3rd trip to RAGBRAI from SoCal. It’s an amazing experience that is definitely worth the trek across the country. I remember making similar trips with my family as a youngster and I wouldn’t trade those memories for anything.
This will be my third trip to RAGBRAI too, cbengford. Never traveled with my family but did have them accompany me on the my annual RAIN (Ride Across Indiana) a few times. I think the trick is to remember to include them in the experience as much as possible. They may think your bike is cool or pretty but that’s about it. Maybe read the excellent daily pre-ride reviews on this site with your family and have them find events or places that interest them. I bet your son would love being designated Director Sportif for the week. I have learned after 3 trips to slow things down and talk to as many people as possible…both those riding & the locals along the way.
I will absolutely guarantee you that your son will be treated royally by more people than he has ever encounted in his young life…and the memories of the week will be with him forever. A vacation to the beach or mountains is fine…but my daughters (now 22 & 19)remember them less fondly (and have less stories to tell) than the few trips we took “outside the norm”…like a week @ RAGBRAI for example.
That’s about it…have a blast!!!
I will be driving and riding with my 13 year old and seventeen year old from California. Its our first as well. It seems like it will be fun. I know my girls love children and I am sure many on the ride feel the same way
Some of my most memorable memories as a kid were my week+ long vacations taken in our small family mini-van. We would camp and stay with family all across OK, TX, AZ, and UT. At the end, we topped it off with an stay at yellowstone for a few more days. It was the best.
I wonder if you could add an extra day to the ride out and back, in order to take more time to stop and play with the kid at playgrounds. Nothing like running around the park to put the kid to sleep.
That’s what I do with my 2 year old when I’m in charge of babysitting. First thing on the agenda: endless running. Second thing: nap time. Third thing: time by myself.
worried adout him on the drive out and back or what he will do for the week while you ride? Waterparks and movies to get in someplace air-conditioned, or the kids section in local libraries. Is your wife meeing you in any of the meeting towns or just going overnight to overnight? Stopping in Story City with him might be worth a ride on the antique carousel, easy in-out from I-35. Which part of Cal? I-90 instead of I-80? then you have Devils Tower, Badlands of S Dak., Mt. Rushmore and Deadwood if you have the time.
