Unregistered riders (aka Bandits) are expected on one day rides in and out of larger overnight towns (like Cedar Rapids). That’s not such a big deal. However, if you’re going to ride RAGBRAI for the week or for several days, you should “man up” and pay the registration fee to support the ride. It takes a lot of planning and logistics to make RAGBRAI happen each year, so if you want the tune you need to pay the piper as it were.
The next time you go on any ride where the organizers have a fee , ask them how they feel about riders who do not pay .
Thanks for the feedback. Having participated in the MS150, Houston to Austin last year, it made me appreciate the effort that goes into organizing and making these rides such a huge success. That ride said they would stop registering after 13000. I, personnally, would never participate withour paying the registration fee are raising the minimum required donation are both. I could never justify cheating the towns, the other riders, myself, and the people that the money will benefit. I guess the reason I brought the subject up was so I could get a feel for how many riders actually particpate. I’ve heard everything from 8,000 to 40,000 so I was trying to see if I could get a more realistic feel for the number of registered and unregistered riders. I think the Iowa state patrol department lets RAGBRAI register 10,000 riders. If it sells out, I wonder how many people will ride in addition to the 10,000? Any ideas?
The highest estimate I’ve ever seen for total riders on a day was around 16,000, though I’ve never really seen an accurate count. On average I’d say there are several thousand unregistered riders on any given day. Glad to hear you’re not a scab. We don’t let anyone go with our team unless they are registered. See you on the ride.
I’m so excited to discuss this again!!! Since we all agree that being a “bandit” is stealing services from someone I will once again make the offer to send a check into the Register if you can prove that I use their services. I’m ready for your insults, threats, and claims that the register ownes public roads!!
Getaclueblue, there are many ways of doing ragbrai. You can pay the register for all of their services as some of the people here do, or you can pay a club or independent organization to provide those services to you. There will be a lot of responses to this telling you why you have to pay the registar, the truth is this debate is nothing more than an arguement about which is better Coke or Pepsi. You will have to pay someone either way, it’s your choice who.
TB, I knew you’d show up on this thread, LMAO!!! Maybe this year we’ll meet up on a Kurb for beer!!!!
Sounds like I’m rubbing salt in an old wound.Well, anyway Blondie and Michrider, know I’m confused and I’m not even blond. Aren’t you supposed to pay the $150 for a wristband no matter what? What if you join up with PBV or someother charter, wouldn’t you still have to pay the $150 for a wristband in addition to the charter service fees before they would let you use their rider service?
This is my first RAGTBRAI so I want to follow the proper process for registering but ,on the other had, I don’t want to be taken advantage of or waste money. Brake it down in terms an 8 year old would understand. lol

yes, the chartes won’t take people without the official wrist band. the $150 RAGBRAI fee covers all their medical, marking, sag, salaries, housing, and mapping costs. It also allow you to put your bags on their semis. After the ride is over and bills paid, the Register often gives money to the host towns and charities. Anything you pay to a charter, club or team is to cover their costs.
GACB, it is called RAGBRAI instead of “Team Blonde’s ride across Iowa” for a reason. You can be a good citizen and buy a wristband like the vast majority of riders, or go bandit like TM and act like all those towns and people turned out just for you and friends. You aren’t getting taken advantage of by buying a wrist band.
Like I said before if you want to use the services that RAGBRAI provides then you should pay them for it. There are other ways out there to do it without using what they provide. Dont let everyone here trick you into thinking that the towns dont want you there because you dont pay the Register. Take a few minutes to call the towns Chamber of Commerce, I have before and they are more than happy to have you there. Once again, it is just an arguement of which tastes better Coke or Pepsi.
