Packwood did a great job in 2009. They had a centralized food distribution system, which works well for the really small towns like Packwood. I recall sitting on a bench chatting with an 88 yr old lady who was just thrilled to be there with the cyclists. Hedrick was the first town the morning we went through. Many people bypassed it, but they had the best supply of Kybos I have seen. Martinsburg– another great tiny town that put on a great time.
remember some pass through towns on the map may not be real towns with any services. Some may be nothing more than a couple of houses left at a crossrod and a couple years ago between Exira and Coon Rapids a “town” on the map was a microwave relay tower on the top of a hill with no signof the former town.
I saw some astericks on the RAG map that denoted an “unincorprated” town. Probably this is a warning that describes a very small or essentially non-existing community where services may be hard to find. (See Tennant on day 1 as an example.) We did have food stands in Tennant, however, several years ago when RAG went on the same route, CB to Harlan for day 1.
In Guthrie Center we will have the majority of the vendors located in Mitchell Park which is on Hwy 44 to the right as you come in to town from the west. We are planning on a beer garden with a band and lots of vendors. The park has lots and lots of shade trees.
There will be vendors uptown – our established businesses – a couple of restaurants – Prime Time and Subway. We also have a Casey’s, Dollar General, Hometown Grocery, and Sparky’s in the downtown area.
The kybos and water bottle filling station will be at Mitchell Park. For anyone wanting to swim we have our aquatic center in Mitchell Park also.
We were a pass through town in 2006. If there are any requests for what we should do or have please post it on this site and we’ll do our best!
