  • I spent some time with the lovely folks at the General Store, the bar/restaurant in Stone City, this afternoon discussing RAGBRAI with them. I believe they will be a very happening off route destination. They are wanting to know just how happening. So, I’m putting it out to my fellow forumites. How many people do you think will detour off route to Stone City? It’s a historic site, 2 miles off the main route.

  • Is that associated with the Stone City brewery that used to brew in Solon,IA? I student taught up in Solon and used to stop and get a growler full everyday.

  • Is their store the one in Grant Wood’s painting? I plan on visiting Stone City to chat with Wood’s ghost on improving my painting techniques.

  • I’m not sure if it’s the store that is in the painting, but it is a historical old limestone building that is super cool. I think that the church on the way in to town is in one or more of his paintings.

  • Painting “Stone City” general store on right of riverbank facing away from us. You enter the town from off the left side, on the downhill going past the site of the Stone City Art Colony , house ruins, stone watertower and barn. 90 degree rignt turn at bottom of hill, cross bridge, left turn and follow road in painting that makes it look better (easier?) than it is

  • It seems to me that it will be well worth the detour – especially on Friday when official mileage is only 42.2 miles!

  • I know I and about 5 or 6 friends are planning on it. It is also listed on the team good bear bar guide, so that should generate some solid traffic.

  • The setting for Grant Wood’s “Young Corn” is also not very far off the route on day 6. A few years ago there was serious talk of turning the location into a land fill. Cooler heads prevailed.

  • I also contacted the owner/manager and received the following information:
“Yes, we are getting ‘geared’ up for a fantastic day! We are trying to be prepared as best we can. Port o Potties, food, beer, music from 12pm-10pm, some shade, river rolling by.O Hope to have your crew join us!”

    Can’t WAIT! Sorry Fairview…
