The Register's Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa

Virgins unite!

Any other RAGBRAI virgins here?
Are you as excited as I am? (If you are friend me on FB)
I am obsessed with the thought of RAGBRAI this summer. Since it is highly unlikely that I will be able to get a vacation for the time of the ride, I’ll have to save up all my sick and personal days for RAGBRAI. For the record, I usually use all 10 up by May! LOL

2012 was my first as well. It was sooooo hot/humid. Despite that, I can’t wait to do it again this year. I’m taking my time this year and eating more pie. Just bring plenty of chamois lube and advil!

I’m in for the first time also. I’ve never been on as a rider, just a driver about 15 years ago. I’m or will be ready.

I was a Virgin last year – class of ’12. That was a heck of a year to get deflowered 😉 ! I’m definitely back in for XLI. The beer, the pork, the cornfields, the music, the people and of course the riding. Can’t wait! And I guess I’m lucky with vacation time – I get 23 vacation days per year and can take them whenever I want. RAGBRAI automatically gets allotted 5 of those 23 days!

My last full year on RAGBRAI was 1998.  Given that the ride has changed so much in the last ten to fifteen years or so, if I were to show up again this year would I be a “born-again virgin”?

RAGBRAI virgin here also, making my first ride this year. I cannot TELL you how excited/pumped I am.

I think that the easier route this year, which apparently is to the chagrin of many, will bring out a bigger virgin class this year than most years. But I’d already decided I was going to do it well before the route announcement – 406 miles or 606 miles! 🙂

Looking super forward to it…and a quick hello to everyone here, I’ve been lurking in the forums for a little while & finally signed up today…

Hi Bill,
You are in the same boat…or is that ‘on the same tandem’ as I was….mileage didn’t matter, I was going to do this thing this year regardless. There are som many things I am excited to see and do once RAGBRAI begins that I may go into sensory overload. See ya’ on the roads of Iowa!

Bill, there has never been a 600-mile RAGBRAI, even if you count the additional mileage of the Sesquicentennial Loop in 1996 (somebody correct me if I’m wrong).  In all of RAGBRAI’s history there has been only about five or six years when the ride went over 500 miles; usually 450-480 is par for the course.  I believe the longest official RAGBRAI was RAGBRAI XIII (1985), Haywarden to Clinton with overnights in Sibley, Emmetsburg, Humboldt, Mason City, Waterloo, and Monticello at an advertised distance of 550 miles.

Yes, I was on it, and I literally had to hitchhike, with my duffel bag and my bike in a box, to Haywarden from Le Mars due to a bus mixup prior to the ride in Waterloo.  Now there’s determination for you!!

Another class of ’12 virgin last year… In spite of the heat, headwinds, and the Marshalltown storm I knew that I would be back for more and then some this year. I am not sure shorter equals easier, but then it is all part of the RAGBRAI XLI experience!

Hey all, New rider for 2013 here too at 51. Signed up with PBV to make the transition from loaded self supported solo touring to sag’d ride with 10k+ new friends a little easier.
I’ll be honest , unless PBV just blows me away somehow I will not repeat in 2014, I think the way to go is to try a bunch of charters and maybe even go with the DMR trucks one year. I sort of “get” the ragbrai thing but I think to keep it interesting you need to change it up. And yes without even having done it yet, am planning on doing it every year already…I just know….
So hello and good luck to all the other 1st timers, we’ll be great , you’ll see !

My RAGBRAI cherry was popped on the 2011 ride. But I am going to be honest when I say 2012 somehow felt like the first time all over again. Maybe it will change after successive rides. But after two times it felt like whole new experiences all over again. So I believe what I am trying to say, is that there seems to be something “virgin” about every RAGBRAI, especially after reading some of the threads on this forum.

Was looking forward to losing my virginity last year, but this SC Nebraska farmer had to stay home to keep the water flowing to thirsty crops. I am hoping this year will be different. Signed up with PBV like a bunch of you. Hope it is gentle!

Hi all, yes, I love getting to be a virgin again! lol, although I am not sure I will get in? I started riding for real last summer, and then a job change and this crummy Chicago weather has set me back since about September. I know I need to start training in earnest! Hey, how does this whole thing work, how can a single person get their bike and stuff to the starting point and then get back to get my car? just wondering if any of you can give me the best way to do it– coming from Aurora, Il. thanks!
