I just completed my first RAGBRAI. What a great time! I received both the RAGBRAI XL and Karras loop patches which I think are a pretty great way to show you participated (and paid the fees). But I got to thinking, what do people do with these patches? I’d hate to just throw them in a drawer somewhere for Grand kids to find in 50 years.
Does anyone have any cool ideas?

A friend of mine puts them on a backpack she uses.
I scrapbook life events and they end up in there.
I collect lapel pins and have those all pinned on a bandana that is easy to hang/display.
If you have some really great pictures you could frame a picture collage and include the patches in that.
Or you could get really crazy and get on Pinterest and see what ideas are out there – I have never been on Pinterest and am scared of it, so that is just a wild idea I threw out there.

I’ve sewn my 12 patches on a ‘RAGBRAI’ shirt and I might wear it once or twice during the week, after the ride and eating relaxing whatever. All but 1 patch is on the back of the shirt, ran out of room for #12, and more than a few times I’ve had people comment about the different years.

Back in the day riders used to wear what was known as a “patch jacket” where they would sew on the patches of the various rides they had taken part in; trouble was, after about three or four good years you had used up all available space, and needed to either cull some of the patches or create a second (or third, or fourth) jacket; or create a jacket dedicated to a specific ride like TOSRV or RAGBRAI. Some cyclists also sewed them onto their handlebar bags, seat bags, panniers, or cycling clothes, although I wouldn’t recommend sewing them onto a lycra jersey since the patches won’t stretch like the lycra will.

Do not sew them on your panniers..they will fade in the sun.

Pilots (and fighter pilots especially) usually have a room, or at least a wall in a room, dedicated to their accomplishments. It’s called the “I Love Me” room…..

I waited until I had about 10 years worth of patches, then mounted them in a poster frame on some nice backing paper from the art store. It hangs in our hallway and looks great. Actually, I’m overdue on doing a second one.

Steve, yes there is a patch for the ’73 RAGBRAI, called the Kaul-Karras Bike Ride back then. My pride and joy are my patches for ’73 and ’74.

I have my RAGBRAI and Karras Loop patches, my wristband, a copy of the route, and the Lance poster from RAGBRAI XXXIV, all hanging on my cubicle wall next to my computer at work. Helps me think of happier times when work gets rough!
