Maybe I just am looking in the wrong place. Or maybe it’s the elephant in the room. I’ve enjoyed all the host town’s efforts on RAGBRAI websites – I am a huge fan of guest housing on RAGBRAI. They all blossomed with information right about May 1 with the lottery results, etc. But I see nothing from Ft. Madison, the ending town. What gives? No parking detail, no guest housing (for the charter folk from the east), nuttin. 9 years ago they did fine. This year, all there is on their site is ‘Y’all come back, we’ll have something up soon.’
Here is what their facebook page had as a response to a person wanting a shirt.
We are currently trying to resolve hosting issues on our website. It should be back up this week for you to order a shirt. We will update our page once it’s live again. Thank you for your patience! Happy riding!
I must say I’m not surprised. I offered my help to the person in charge of this in FM and they told me they wanted my input and would contact me. Never heard back, I hope this is not an indication of the competence in general. As for parking, I would assume that the old Sheaffer pen factory lot which is across from the tire dip plus Marina parking plus abandoned riverboat Casino parking lot. This is an assumption based on common sense which may or may not hold true.
This is a note I just received. Someone is alive in Ft. Madison!
“Hello Andrew- Thank you for your note. I am pleased that you will be joining us for RAGBRAI this summer, and I assure you that the ride is indeed ending in Fort Madison! As you’ve discovered, we have had some complications with our website. The website will be live by the end of tomorrow, and you will find all of the items that you’re searching for on our site, http://www.fortmadisonragbrai.com.”
PBV’s last update had this information; “Before you complete your long-term parking form, we would like you to know where we will be located. On Friday and Saturday, the 19th and 20th of July, AND on Saturday, the 27th of July, Pork Belly Ventures will be located at the YMCA, right across the street from the Holy Trinity Catholic School long-term parking facility. This location is about five blocks from the main campground (the public high school) on Friday, the 19th. It is about six blocks from the rider route into town on Saturday, the 27th. It’s a lovely and functional site for us, and we’re thrilled to have the assignment. To park at Holy Trinity High School, the fee for the week is $55, as you’ll see on the form. This parking site will be patrolled.”
They did update the website, last Friday I think. The parking information is on there, with a printable form for reserving your spot, etc. The other links on their web page to this minute still lead nowhere. I hope they have enough volunteer help and enthusiasm to make the event work for them. It’s hell to be a volunteer without enough support. The mind reels with sympathy for the good folks trying to make Ft. Madison work for us. I did write to the person who has answered my prior inquiries in Ft. Madison. If I learn more, I’ll post it here.
Just had another letter from the doubtless hardworking person in Ft. Madison. Though only the parking link works on their website, I can imagine they are scrambling still to get other information to us. I have a guest housing application from them, so I know they are doing that. Porkers already know where they are staging to bus west. O.O.S. says they will stage and load at the high school. Farther developments will follow – remember, all the people helping you are volunteers, and working hard for your happiness.
