  • The ride now known as SAGBRAW is regarded as the start of organized bike touring in the state. A weeklong 360-mile loop tour starting and ending in Appleton, SAGBRAW was launched in 1977 as the Sentinel’s Active Americans Great Bike Ride Across Wisconsin. Sponsored by the Milwaukee Sentinel, the ride was modeled on the rollicking success of RAGBRAI, the Register’s Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa. The rolling RAGBRAI circus covers 480 miles in one week and has drawn up to 20,000 riders in a single year; it is a literal party on wheels.

In Wisconsin, SAGBRAW spawned GRABAAWR, a slightly longer tour, in 1985. Bill Hauda organized the GRABAAWR tour along the Wisconsin River to raise money for the nonprofit advocacy group Common Cause. In 2006, Hauda retired and sold SAGBRAW and GRABAAWR to the Schramms. Hauda is back in business this year, organizing the Badger Land Adventure On State Trails, which will roll 225 miles from La Crosse to Milwaukee, July 8 to 13, primarily using the state trails between the two cities. Tours run by Dennis Northey, operating as Pedal Over Wisconsin Week on Wheels, round out the summer options for supported touring. Riders on the POWWOW Fox Valley Tour pedal for 360 miles from June 12 to 17, starting and finishing in Watertown.
