When Beth Howard applied for a pie-baker job at a Malibu, California, bakery, her only qualification was an Iowa heritage.

Turns out, that was more than enough to get her the job — and to launch a career.

“Iowa and pie. In my life, it’s like they’ve always been deeply connected,” Howard said. “When people think of one, they think of the other.”

Howard, an accomplished writer and baker, is filming a documentary about Iowa’s connection to pie, titled PIEOWA. She is currently fundraising to collect stories along the entire RAGBRAI route and at the State Fair.
