A haunted house in July

Quasqueton, Ia. — The screams coming out of a trailer in Quasqueton weren’t despair the heavy rain hadn’t ended yet.

They had more to do with blood splattered on the walls. Fake blood, of course.

Quasqueton residents put together a popular haunted house each October that they’re very proud of.

So they decided to give RAGBRAI participants a taste of the show.

“We thought it would be fun for people to see what we do,” said Sally Manson, of Quasqueton, standing under a tent where she’d been yelling to attract people.

This haunted house, taking up one trailer, is smaller than the annual event when the town puts three of four trailers together. But it was good enough for Dan and Gail Green, who’d come from Oletha, Kan., to ride.

“We need to get scared to get warm, Dan Green, 44, said as he paid for two $2 tickets.

Inside the haunted house, they saw a woman making stew with a human head (“I think it was real,” Dan Green joked), and children that tried to drag them into a cornfield.

Inside the haunted house, they saw “creepy, bloody children,” that tried to drag them into a cornfield.

“It was awesome,” Dan Green, 44, said. “It was super scary and fun.”

Benefits from the haunted house will be combined with money raised by non-profits selling food and will benefit various charities.

Not many people have stopped at the haunted house yet, but Manson is trying to get their attention.

“It’s dry,” she yelled. “And scary.”

I know it’s not necessary but it would have been nice if some of the towns people could have donated warm sweatshirts, etc. to those cyclists that were unfortunately not prepared for the cold rain. :(

    or sold warm used clothing.

It would have been great if Jubilee had food for riders or something hot to drink. There were 2 women selling bagels on the corner, and that was it. Same thought for Shady Grove – although I think there were some vendors where we expected to see Shady Grove, I biked through the “town” without even realizing it was there. 27 miles without a town on such a cold wet day was pretty terrible.
