Alert Iowa will Warn Riders of Severe Weather During RAGBRAI

ALERT IOWA is an emergency messaging system. The system allows officials to quickly disseminate emergency information to riders along the route via text message. These messages include Tornado Warnings and Severe Thunderstorm Warnings issued by the National Weather Service.
Text RAGBRAI to 69310
The service will be active July 22-29, 2017.
You will only receive emergency notifications.

If we do get hit with severe storms. Where do we go if we are in the host towns or on the roads. Never been in this curcumstances

Can we go ahead and text RAGBRAI to 69310 now to register ourselves for this service or do we have to wait until the service is active on July 22? It would be more convenient to do now while we have this info of course.
I just tried to register and it is allowing you to register ahead of time.
