First day less strenuous for riders

Cooler temperatures and a less strenuous first-day ride meant fewer medical calls for RAGBRAI riders than last year, one official said.

Six people had been transported to the hospital by about 3:30 p.m., said Bob Libby, Director of CARE Ambulance, which provides emergency response services for RAGBRAI.

“We probably had about half the incidents compared to last year, thanks to the nice weather we had today,” Libby said.

Most, if not all, of those transported to the hospital suffered Orthopaedic injuries, such as broken collar bones, Libby said.

Broken bones and heat-related issues, such as heat stroke and heat exhaustion, are among the most common problems Libby’s staff deals with, he said.

Thank you for not coming through Webster country and my area. I appreciate it! This event is not safe, as someone always seems do die every year, and you screw up traffic. In fact I think some counties will not allow this ride due to past lawsuits.

Harris, Harris, Harris….you poor old curmudgeon. Something about 10,000 people having fun and spending TONS of money in your country is outweighed by traffic getting messed up? And hey, Harris, people die every day. If I were to die and had my choice, dying on Ragbrai would be a hell of a way to go.

Go drink a beer and keep your negativity to yourself.

Go Steffie Jo, Go! Thinking of you, Dan and friends. Love, mom

It was my privilege to watch riders depart from the soccer field from before first light and for several hours – every imaginable type of wheeled cycle only outshone by the headware, bikeware, etc. of the participants! I think my personal favorite were the gals in the cow (spotted) jerseys who had pink ‘udders’ as the bike bags hanging from the bar! But so many creative and clever folks – loon helmets, Batman, Superman, tutus too! Keep calm and cycle on!
