First day less strenuous for riders

Cooler temperatures and a less strenuous first-day ride meant fewer medical calls for RAGBRAI riders than last year, one official said.
Six people had been transported to the hospital by about 3:30 p.m., said Bob Libby, Director of CARE Ambulance, which provides emergency response services for RAGBRAI.
“We probably had about half the incidents compared to last year, thanks to the nice weather we had today,” Libby said.
Most, if not all, of those transported to the hospital suffered Orthopaedic injuries, such as broken collar bones, Libby said.
Broken bones and heat-related issues, such as heat stroke and heat exhaustion, are among the most common problems Libby’s staff deals with, he said.
