genefruit: Steamboat Bertrand Collection is located in Missouri Valley. Twain lived in Keokuk.

Genefruit, you hit the nail on the head! Please allow me to expand on the rationale of why you are correct.

The steamboat serves as the indication of both the starting and ending towns. According to my AAA Tour Book (2014 edition, page 100), “The steamboat Bertrand, carrying a $300,000 cargo bound for gold miners and settlers in the Montana Territory, sank here on its maiden voyage in 1865. Archeological artifacts recovered from the ship’s hold are displayed at the DeSoto National Wildlife Refuge” in Missouri Valley. Page 93 of the same book contains a reference to the George M. VerrityRiverboat Museum in Victory Park in Keokuk and also mentions that Mark Twain, a noted riverboat pilot himself, also “lived and worked briefly in Keokuk.”

Now that we have the starting and ending towns figured out, let the guessing begin about the overnight towns! Have fun with it!

See you along the I-O-Way in July.
