In 2019, I started my training in early March (Chicago). It was cold, so I used some merino wool base layer tops that I had for skiing. Wool holds in the warmth while being very breathable. Side benefit, when merino gets wet you stay warm. Having trained so much with those base layers, I brought one along…kind of a security blanket. Came in real handy on Day 1…yeah, I was wet but I stayed pretty warm the whole time. Didn’t wear it at all on the remaining days because it wasn’t needed. If the forecast looks remotely like that awful combination of wet and cold, consider merino in addition to ponchos, rain jackets or Hefty…nature got it right.
