I combine my passion for photography with my love of bicycling! I pack my Nikon D3000 with a macro-zoom lens whenever I ride.
On Ragbrai, I look beyond the obvious and look for subjects that speak “Iowa” to me. A scenic cornfield, while picturesque, could be in Illinois or Indiana or Ohio, without something in the picture that speaks of “Iowa.” I’d probably pass on that shot. A stereotypical conical water tower (think of the Ragbrai logo of several years back), with the town name on it, would make the cut! A picture of the Mr Porkchop bus, grills and crowd, would also be a selection Unique architecture like readily-identifiable courthouses, churches and shrines, etc. are personal favorites. Of course, any picture showing the riders, either solo, small group or large masses, wearing Ragbrai gear, also works.
It all comes down to this: “Whatever catches your eye and appeals to you is OK!” It’s your Ragbrai! Ride it and photograph it the way you want. It’s all good.
See you along the I-O-Way in July.
