TOSRV (Tour of the Scioto River Valley, in Ohio) 1966

“The 1966 TOSRV brought two big ‘firsts’.  Ten of the 45 riders were female.  Nine of the ten rode the whole distance.  And no doubt Kathy Hammond (second row, center) would have done the whole 210 miles if it hadn’t been for the collision with the cow that sent her to the hospital on Saturday.  But she was OK and rode all the way from Portsmouth to Columbus on Sunday.”

For years afterwards the TOSRV maps always included an image of a cow, emblazoned with her initials, at the approximate point on the route where the collision took place …. and even today, almost 45 years after the fact, her legacy lives on through the courtesy (?) of the Internet.

“When she returned to ride in 1968 her friend Galen Gilbert surprised her with a cow catcher to attach to her bike enabling her to avoid any cow-caused delays.”
