Reply To: Bike Fit- Wear your Bike or it will wear you!

We get it, jj.  You are willing to drag your bike over to your LBS and let the “pros”, with their lasers, micrometers, and all that latest high-tech gear, tweak it every time you feel something is out of adjustment, fit-wise.  Tony and I would rather take a wrench and do something ourselves, then get on the bike and ride.

And just for the record, I’ve seen some of the “pros” at the local bike shop…..who about two weeks before were asking “Would you like fries with that?” at the local Mickey D’s.  Just because you took a quickie course in something doesn’t make you an expert.

I also wonder just how riders like Eddy Merckx and his contemporaries were able to get their bikes to fit without all that scientific mumbo-jumbo.  Could it be that there just might be something to the old rules of thumb, and the use of a plumb bob, a tape measure, a level, and a wrench will still work for the vast majority of riders?

By the way — my mother has had both a hip and a knee replacement; I have an uncle who has had *BOTH* knees replaced; and my father was seeing a doctor with an eye toward knee surgery before he died…..and to my knowledge, none of these people spent all that much time riding bicycles, properly fitted or not.  I, on the other hand, have ridden extensively, do my own bike fitting, ride several different bicycles all with their own geometries, and suffer from nothing worse than hypertension and cellulitis.

Like people who don’t smoke but still develop lung cancer, sometimes your body turns on you for no apparent reason.  Remember Jim Fixx?
