hi, rkhawkeye,
I second what Corey says about the bike. Get a good one. It’s your main piece of equipment for training, so it needs to fit YOU. The first year I rode RAGBRAI, I rode the complete week on a hybrid bike (sort of a cross between a road bike and a mountain bike.) While I had a good ride and the bike performed well, the next year, I bought a road bike, which was much lighter, fit me better, and allowed for a much better week. One of the big differences for me was that I was able to switch hand positions, which helped tremendously with the problem I was having with tingling or numb fingers. There are other reasons to buy a bike which costs more than the $200-$400 range you were thinking — most of them have to do with the quality of the materials, how well they’ll perform, how long they’ll last, and whether or not you can repair them easily. For me, it was money well spent. My hybrid, when new, cost about $750 in 1997. The road bike was $1100 in 2004. I’m still riding it.
