I\\\’ve been on RAGBRAI for the last 30 years, so I\\\’ll way in with some advice for the virgin.

Start out with shorter rides the first week or so (5, 10, 15,etc.). Get to where you can go out 2 to 3 times per week and do 20 miles or so each night. On weekend practice RAGBRAI. Go out in the morning and do 20 to 30 miles, break for lunch and do afternoon ride about the same. That way you get used to riding between 40 and 60 miles in a stretch. As your endurance increases, stretch your weekend ride to get one or two 70 to 80 mile days in so you get the feel of a longer day. If you can work in some local event rides, you\\\’ll get use to riding in larger groups. You should be ready for RAGBRAI.

Recruit friends to ride training rides/go on RAGBRAI. Check with local bike shops for clubs in your area to ride with.

Invest in a good entry level bike. You\\\’re looking at between a $500 to $700 investment. You may be able to get more bike for less by buying a good used one. Avoid Huffy\\\’s or Target/Walmart brands as they are way too heavy and for the playground. Make sure you have two water bottle cages on the bike. Tire repair kit, pump, and bike light are good ideas too. So is the hazard flasher for the back of the bike or clip on to your belt or trunk bag.

Get a helmet. You\\\’ll get enough brain damage from the beer and fatigue. Best investment for riding.
