Short Answer; Not really.

Longer answer; Yes, but more a personal taste matter. All helmets sold in the US have to meet the CPSC Standards. There is also a SNELL B-95 standard that is slightly more strict. (The older SNELL B-90) standard has been superceded by the CPSC Standard). These standards establish maximum force that can be transmited in an impact, roll-off prevention, etc.

The differences between helmets, excluding very specilized ones like aerodynamic time trial helmets and full face downhill MTB helmets, is really boils down to 2 issues:
1. DOES IT FIT RIGHT????
2. Do I like the way it looks / feels

When I get a new helmet, I look first for one with good air-flow, and is easy to adjust. Since almost all but the cheapest helmets now seem to feature some type of “turn the wheel” adjuster in the back, it makes it easy to dial in the fit. The better it fits, the more likely it’s going to keep my melon intact.

Helmets are designed for a 1 impact use, after it’s protected your melon, even if it looks ok, it really should be replaced. I also like to replace my helmet every 2 years, just based on the fact that it can degrade over time from exposure.

For what it’s worth, my first helmet looked like this model, and yes, it was a few years ago. :)

Hope this helps.

Steve
