I believe, as a bicyclist, if you are riding in non-residential traffic and taking a higher risk, a helmet should be mandatory. Lets face it to not wear one would not be in your best interest, let alone another “motorist’s.” But freedom of choice is also important. For example if you are riding in a residential area, you should have the choice to wear or not to wear.

I might be a little more friendly to the mandatory law, if it was truly for the safety of the rider, and their best interest. But to be honest these law makers could give a flying fart…it is for insurance purposes, just like the seat belt laws. NOt to mention it will give another reason for tickets. I have gotten three tickets in the last year by the way, involving my bike….whether it was a side walk, or an “incorrect” signal. I guess you could say I am biased.
