Yes “99” was hot!!!
In an earlier post, different thread, I took an educated guess that this year was the 4th hottest since “90” when I started. According to ISU, based on average heat index from the DM airport it was second. Hey, I did better than you’ll get from the 6 o’clock news.
The big difference between this year, “99”, and a couple others, in my opinion, was the overnight temps. This year I started with my fan every night but always turned it off at some point. Two nights my feet got cold, and on the last night I actually pulled out a light blanket. In “99” if I got the blanket out, it was to load it up with ice, or soak up the puddle I was sleeping in.
A few more tidbits about “99” :
the last big hill from Wadena to Arlington is close to 2 1/2 miles
the tar from the expansion cracks starts to melt when the surface temp.
of the road reaches 140 degrees
the tire tracks on that hill took over 1 1/2 years to wear off…we camp up
2500 is closer to the number who either sagged on Fri. or bailed
completeley…..my wife and I got into Belevue around noon, didn’t
leave until 4, and had the best part of our week sitting on the levee
watching thousands of riders come in
