2018 Guess the Route Contest Predictions

Its time to put in what our guesses are for the “Guess the Route” contest. Since this is not a RAGRBRAI ending in a 0 like the 40th, I think they’ll stick with the northern-central-southern route rotation making this year a central route. I’m working on mine. I think this year we’ll be enjoying some of the Iowa’s slightly larger cities. Starting in Council Bluffs, going through Ames and ending in Dubuque. Let’s start putting out our full route predictions we’ll actually enter the contest with!

What town is Snake Alley in?

mootsman, January 3, 2018 at 6:36 am

Snake Alley is in Burlington. There was an optional little (< 1 mile) loop going up it in 2009.

Mark Bundick, January 3, 2018 at 8:04 am

Missouri Valley
Mount Pleasant

You are very correct Mootsman! I remember it well, I did not realize what I was getting into until I was already committed. I was riding self contained and my lowest gear was 42×25. They handed out a foam can cooler at the top that I still have. It has a rattle snake depicted on it with ” I rattled the Snake, SNAKE ALLEY BURLINGTON,IA 2009″. I really felt like I had earned that keepsake.

Ames was fantastic in 2008. I’ve got my fingers crossed for another Ames stop.

Yes, I had fun in Burlington. I also rode past (past not up) Snake Alley! I’m ready to go back to Burlington and Ames!!!

BTW, RAGBRAI don’t care!!!

Okay, I officially put in my prediction to the contest. Here goes: Missouri Valley – Denison – Jefferson – Ames – Grinnell – West Branch – Maquoketa – Clinton.

Groeny82, January 9, 2018 at 9:36 am

Onawa, Denison, Coon Rapids, Madrid, Newton, Belle Plaine, Tipton, Clinton

Scott, January 9, 2018 at 12:00 pm

LOL! Madrid!

We’re overdue for a route through the western towns between I-80 and Highway 30-ish (we haven’t really been there since XXXIX) so I’m saying Missouri Valley-Denison-Carroll-Perry-Ankeny-Grinnell-Iowa City-Davenport. Karras Loop on an 85-mile day from Carroll to Perry.

Why is Madrid (pop. 2500) more LOL-worthy than Coon Rapids (1300)?

Ken Reed, January 9, 2018 at 7:21 pm

Leon had 1,900. I personally think Madrid would be an awesome stop.

Scott, January 10, 2018 at 6:27 am

I live in Madrid so it’s more LOL for me. Leon has a motel, Madrid and Coon Rapids don’t, so I’m betting neither of those towns are even eligible.

Ken Reed, January 10, 2018 at 7:14 am

Madrid doesn’t have a motel? Didn’t know that. It would make an excellent meeting town then.

Scott, January 10, 2018 at 7:21 am

Madrid is in a tough location. I don’t think we’d ever ride down HWY 17 because it’s way too busy. Which leaves only HWY 210 from Woodward and to Slater as the options. You can only get to Woodward via 4 lane HWY 141. I know RAGBRAI came through in 2000ish but not sure how they got there.
