Yeah the Jefferson to Ames day is less than 1000 feet of climb and it all may be on one hill getting out of the DSM River. If memory serves, it was a doozy.

Why be afraid of hills and wind? Since you obviously like riding a bike (you are doing RAGBRAI), wind and hills cause you to ride slower so you can ride more and you get a lot more chances to hear Sweet Caroline. Sound like a win all around to me.

Some years the hills are neither many nor notable. Some years there are some real stinkers. Some years there are so many you’ll swear they trucked some of them in from out of state for the occasion. If you do not get the hills you wanted this year or if you got more than you wanted this year, its just one more reason to come back next year.
