RAGBRAI LI Route Announced on Jan. 27!

2023 Overnight Towns

I guess there must have a lot of people guessed right.

Sioux City, Storm Lake have been leaked out before the announcement. Ames (Iowa State U), Des Moines, Coralville (U Iowa) and then ending in Davenprot are almost locked in for RAGBRAI L.

Who have figured out Carroll and Tama-Toledo?

Last time we went through Ames, I went off route just to ride the High Trestle trail. Ended up making friends with a group of people hitting the bars on the trail for a birthday party. Made a wrong turn at Slater and almost rode all the way to Ankeny before I realized my mistake. Rode into Ames as the sun was setting, set up my tent as it was getting dark, took a sun shower in the dark, and called it a night. I rode a 124 miles that day. I might of had a beer or two too many that day – the birthday party group had wrist bands and they kept “buying” me beers.

In Ames we’ve stayed at the Cross Country course off Mortensen road in ’08 +’18. Back in 1983, we were at the football stadium. Lots of parking there.

Cyclone – HOW DO YOU REMEMBER ALL THAT? This will be my eighteenth year and I can’t keep the over nights straight. I don’t doubt you for a second though. I have an Iowa map in Google Earth with all of my trips shown so I know when we’ve been where and I certainly remember lots of the camping spots but as for the names of the towns that go with them….not so much. See you in July.

@Randall Murphy, I grew up in Ames, and graduated from Iowa State as well. At age 13, RAGBRAI 11 was my first of 38 RAGBRAI’s, and I can remember a lot about those first few I rode on. Once I got into my late teens, and early 20’s, a lot of those RAGBRAI’s are a little fuzzy for some reason…

Seems likely for Monday, although it’s slightly (1-2 miles) short compared to the official mileage:

Storm Lake, (W Lakeshore Dr), Sulphur Springs, Newell, Sac City, (N State Rd, Lake View), (Lake View Bike Arch, Sauk Rail Trail), Carroll

Saturday, the mileage seems to make it a straight run:

For Coralville, camping/entertainment will be at ST Morrison Park according to City of Coralville website

“Coralville will welcome riders coming in from Tama/Toledo on Friday, July 28, and will usher them to Davenport to finish their journey. Exact details of the route will be announced at a later date. S.T. Morrison Park will serve as the hub for camping and entertainment.”

I doubt if either the Sauk Rail, High Trestle, or Chichaqua Trails will be part of the official route, although many riders will opt for them. I’d also be surprised if the Fairgrounds will be used, although it would be ideal. Waterworks Park is more likely.

Can’t see them sending a ride like this down the Sauk River trail. Nice trail but way, way to narrow to accommodate a ride like RAGBRAI.

Charles, Thanks for the info on Coralville (ST Morrison Park).

Des Moines overnight would have to include Waterworks, home of the RAGBRAI GODS Statue. Fairgrounds as well.
