Do most riders carry cash, or a checking card for the week?
Think i’m leaning on the card. Is there some what of a good average of money that will be spent during the weeks ride. Planning on camping the whole time, and money spent on beer is out until end of Sept. (frown) I do love my cold Corona’s and lime.

KittySlayer,
$5 shower??????
Wow! Prices have gone up since I last rode RAGBRAI. We never paid for a shower, or, if we did, it was no more than a quarter in the machine at the local pool. It was usually something along the lines of a fire-hose connected to a makeshift gang shower in the street. What are the shower facilities like these days?

Schools & “Y’s”, charge $3-5, sometimes includes towel use, sometimes an extra dollar. Couple of shower vendors, think semi trailer with shower heads along one side inside. Have seen some set up in car washes, rinse, soap, rinse, skip the wax :-)
Schools often run out of hot water and drainage sometimes becomes an issue. The mass shower in the street thing is frowned upon now due to concerns about gray water runoff.
We usually try to use the home(s) where we stay and put out a tip jar in the bathroom(s)
I was thinking of bringing a solar shower bag. Would use of it, too, be frowned upon for gray water concerns?

lots of people do use them. frowned upon? a little but not as much as those that used to be set up in the streets ans what not. I don’t see a gallon or two in the grass as that much of a problem, esp if people pack a bio-degradable soap.
Dr Bronner’s for all your washing needs :)
the last time we were starting in Glenwood I remember hitting an ATM at the gas station across the street from that one bar. I was able to get cash but as I was standing talking to some Biker Chicks that had just ridden to Glenwood from Denver, CO the ATM ran out of money. This was on Friday night before the sunset.
cheers,

I survived the toaster. But got grilled in the skillet. Now I need Butt Butter to sooth the burn….LMAO
It’ll be different, for sure, but not necessarily in a bad way. There will be twice as many riders and it’ll cost twice as much money (or more), but I’m treating it as a whole new experience.
Perhaps the biggest difference for me will be the fact that I will not be riding with my infant daughter on the back of the bike. While those were great times, I’m looking forward to seeing the ride from a whole new perspective. (On my last ride, I was in the tent by 8 pm trying to get Desiree to sleep. On the road, I was focused on keeping her in supply of juice and snacks and sunscreen. I never got to experience the so-called “curb time” that you all talk so fondly of in this forum.) I can’t wait!

Did you miss the line item for beer?
Did you miss the line item for Bloody Marys?
I’ve never paid for a shower, but there’ve been a couple of times that I just used a garden hose. Brrr!! We have a nice setup on our bus now. I always carry cash and have my card in case of emergencies. I take about $60-80 out of my stash each morning and typically have some left over at the end of the day. It was a little different last year since I had two bottomless pits, I mean my sons, with me!
plenty of garden hose & water bottle “showers” too. If we end up eating in sompleace that does take plastic, I will use it there. otherwise lots of 5’s & 10’s
You should splurge at least a couple of times and try one of the shower vendors. To me, they’re a marvel of the capitalist system. Find an old semi-trailer, plumb in a couple dozen shower heads, hook up an in-line water heater the size of a jet engine, hook the whole thing up to fire hydrant, and you’re in business! Good water pressure (most of the time) and endless hot water. Well worth the $5 price of admission.
