I was going to go loner this year but my wife nixed the idea. She wanted me to be with a group that would notice my absence in the evening camp should something happen to me during the day so I have signed up with the Riverbend club charter. As others have said unless you work at being alone you will quickly be able to find people to pal around with. I expect that will be what happens with me and the Riverbend club. By the time we head out on Sunday I will likely have found a group to ride with.
I’m going alone this year, but I’m always so outgoing that it never takes me long to make friends where ever I am. I assume it’ll be the same this year at RAGBRAI.
Most of the time I ride solo but I’m never alone with 10,000+ friends going along in the same general direction. Friendships made during a week of RAGBRAI can last a lifetime. You can choose to be a loner but it is much better to make new friends and have fun.
I’m going solo this year. 10,000 – 25,00 friendly folks. No problem. Like Kens wife… mine wanted to nix the idea but I was unable to find a group to join.
As far as safety goes – last year a gent (riding solo) in his mid 70’s got lightheaded due to dehydration & tipped over into the ditch & rolled quite a ways. 10 people stopped – we got him to shade, cool beverage in seconds. The motorcycle medic was there within 5 minutes. He was going to take the sag to the next town & give it a go the next day.
Last year was my first full RAGBRAI and I rode with my brother for 3 days and then a couple guys I met on the previous years RAGBRAI for two days and then rode the last two days by myself. There are so many very friendly people that you never really feel alone. I really enjoyed having the company of family and friends but the last two days I rode by myself were great. No waiting to meet up in the next town or adjusting my ride speed to suit anyone else. I was completely on my own schedule and loved it. Riding with others is great but there is something to be said about a solo ride as well.
Love the posts. I’m kind of a loner, it’s just my daughter and I out there and we have different riding styles so we often ride “alone”, but as other’s have said it’s rare to travel more than 100 yards alone.
I did a solo RAGBRAI in 2012. One of my buddies had passed away and another was having prostate treatment. It was OK. I ran into people I knew from past rides and it made it all the more enjoyable. Some days it was good to just get up and do my own thing. Never hard to find a conversation. But that year was so hot that hanging around camp was miserable regardless of who you were with.Thank God for the bars and churches.
Rode last year by myself, never felt alone. Had a great day with Tess from Oregon. Never a problem making friends along the way. I was with PBV so there was never a problem in camp.

Lots have signed up to do RAGBRAI alone, but once there, you’ll find that to be impossible! To many friendly bikers.
No, you’re never alone.
For maybe ten minutes.
RIDE RIGHT

I’m going by myself, but I doubt if I’ll be alone. Assuming of course, my wristband and stuff ever arrives.
