RAGBRAI LI Route Announced on Jan. 27!

Any veteran riders remaining from 1975 or prior?

I found the special vest and route arrow while getting ready for RAGBRAI this year. The route arrow is autographed by John Karras. I enjoyed getting to know John and Donald Kaul on SAGBRAI then rode RAGBRAI III and IV. After a 36 year hiatus, I’m back for the 40th anniversiary. My Dad will be a RAGBRAI virgin at age 75. I still have newspaper clippings from those early rides. That was really, Back in the Day. Let me know if you rode one of those early rides.

Skunks started in ’78. I know Tim Lane dis the ride before that and think he is doing middle 2 days this year. Karras should be around, last I heard he plans on doing the week.

I was there for every mile of IV in 1976.

I rode from (Hawarden to Ft Madison) in 1975, and for the next decade or more I did not miss a mile. In the late 80s and 90s I was not nearly as consistent.

I was just looking at the weathered Ragbrai V patch yesterday. I’m returning after 29 year gap and much graying. Figured I’d better start on preparing for the big ragbrai 5oh.

I rode only the last day of SAGBRAI. The only reason I did that is because it ended in Dubuque and I was living there at that time. I really had no idea on what to expect but it worked out nice. My best memory of the day was when I was riding up the hill into Eagle Point Park. A nearby rider asked where the road goes and I said we do a loop in the park and back by the entrance. He was no happy about this extra loop and hill. I really did not know much about the route and I followed some people.

Jason – did you do the loop through the park?

I use to work with Tim Lane when he was still with DHS in Waterloo. He hooked me up with RAGBRAI tickets in 1982 and I’ve been on the ride ever since. This will be Team Flamingo’s 30th continuous year on RAGBRAI. If I’d of known about it before then, we’d of been there too.

Has anyone else noticed how their RAGBRAI t-shirts from those early years have shrunk up on the closet shelf?

Bigbird, this will be my 30th too, 29 consecutive. Patti and. Brent also on 30. Jen. G.did one of those early ones with one of her sisters, then missed several years.

My first ride was VI in 1978, and I only missed once from then to RAGBRAI XXV. As the result of a sort of quid pro quo arrangement following RAGBRAI V, I ended up getting my baggage tag for RAGBRAI VI courtesy of John Karras himself.

Can’t say for sure if I’ll be there by bike this year; the spirit is willing, but due to a persistent case of cellulitis the legs are weak.

I just tried on my Rag XI T shirt from 1983 and you are correct, something in my closet must have caused it to shrink. ;)

Pirate Brewer,

38 years later, I absolutely remember the hill going up into the park in Dubuque. I hadn’t walked any hills the whole ride, and that one nearly broke my streak. SAGBRAI was a great week.

I’m trying to post a picture of a bright orange safety vest and route arrow from 1975, but can’t get the link to Photobucket.com to work. :(

Big Bird, those early t-shirts were not Sanforized. I still have that ’76 t-shirt but the patch along with the bag it was sewn to were stolen.

I’m going with “we just wore them tighter then, that was the style”

One of my favorite Tshirts was the “Perils of RAGBRAI 13”

A couple I remember were, “dropping your flashlight in the KYBO”
“If you put a Snickers candy bar in your handlebar bag, the bag will reach a temp of 140 degrees”

I had one, don’t know what ever happened to it, but I bet it shrunk too.
