Is anyone planning to ride from the Big Sioux River to Sioux Center, either Saturday the 21st or early Sunday the 22nd? How important it is for everyone else to go from river to river? (Or does it have to be from the Missouri to the Mississippi?) This being my first whole-week RAGBRAI showing, I’d like to go the whole width of the state. If there’s a group doing it, how do I hook up with them?

sioux city is having a ride from there to Sioux Center. Its 100 mile ride on Saturday and its a timed event. I think its called the fandango
Ok, my newbies want to go to Hudson,SD for two reasons. First is to dip in the Big Sioux and second, they want the extra 30 miles (I guess that will put them just over 500 miles total for the week; I know – they could do the Karras Loop but they said no). This all assumes the 471 mile advertised length of the route does not include the Karras Loop’s extra mileage.
So, looks like to avoid the Gran Fondo traffic which will be going west to east on Road B30, we’ll go north to B40 and go west on it straight to Hudson.
So, has anyone physically (in the past couple of months) inspected the access to the Big Sioux at Hudson,SD? It looks accessible from the satellite photos but those pictures are very often misleading.
Have you ridden there? I am still hoping to actually take B40 or 400th due west to Cherry Ave, then on into Oak Grove State Park. I guess I’d rather ride to a park, than a town. Just curious what the road(s) are like. Hills don’t bother me, more concerned with condition and traffic (in Iowa?, really) LOL Yes, I want the miles, but moreso – the sayin I went coast to coast since for me this will likely be my only RAGBRAI.
I have B40 and B30 reversed. Whatever. B30 is north of B40. But I’ll take the road west that the Gran Fondo does NOT use to enter Sioux Center.
No, mtbmed, never been to Hudson or Oak Grove. I’ve been through Sioux Center on the way to Rock Rapids for the 2007 RAGBRAI, but that’s it. It looks to me like – may be wrong – that the Gran Fondo is going north up the same road as you likely would be using to go south to get to Oak Grove. Take a look, not sure. Those roads are going to be a mess on that Saturday.
I really don’t know how much time I will have on Sat. anyway. Got to ride the PBV shuttle from Omaha airport to Sioux Center, check in with PBV and assemble my bike and three more for the newbies, then ride to the Big Sioux. May take awhile to do all that. And then there is the traffic.
I’ll have to look for sure. I’d rather be safe than sorry, and still get the miles in. See ya in July!

B46 may be the only paved alternative to B40 to get to Oak Grove State Park. Heading west to the park on B40 might be dicey, depending on the Gran Fondo traffic heading east. Coming back from the park on B40 may not be bad, depending on how much Gran Fondo bike traffic is still on it. B46 may be a parking lot or a race track.
Just looked up that ride … I’d have to agree with the B30 route. 16.4 miles according to Bing maps. Aerial photo sure looks like it goes right to water’s edge for an easy tire dip :-)
B46 looks like a good idea for park. Then, riders would at least be going same direction on Cherry and B40. Be a lot safer and certainly on an area where bikes are expected … hope they don’t mind a “non-entered” bike in the mix :-)
I really don’t think Grand Fondue will be a factor, one way or the other. I’d be more concerned with auto traffic mixing it up with the more-important traffic… us!
Any additional traffic the Grand Fondo puts on B40 will be a factor, Bacchetta. So, I’m going to Hudson on B30.
I’m in with you. Let’s do it, then chase Michrider down and hold him to that beer or three he promised on the kurb.
