Chuck Offenburger is one of my favorite RAGBRAI riders, newspaper columnists and a real champion of bicycling here in Iowa. As many of us know Chuck is locked in a struggle with cancer…yeah the big C that has taken so many. While battling cancer with one hand he has, with the other hand, written an outstanding commentary on the baseball career of Bob Feller. Bob Feller, the Iowa farm boy who went directly from high school to pitch in the big show, quite a story.

February was a dream month for us – not a single doctor’s appointment for either Carla or me. It was the first time we’ve gone a month without an appointment since we got started in this cancer battle in July, 2009.

And now March has started even better. On March 1 at McFarland Clinic in Ames, I had a full-body PET-CT scan as a follow-up, 30 days after completing “preventative” radiation and 3-plus months after my stem cells transplant. After a couple hours of nervous waiting, radiation oncologist Dr. Joe Rhoades and then oncologist Dr. Michael Guffy individually told us that there’s no sign of any cancer…
