Clarence … age 93

I met Clarence and his son at a Corn stop the 4th or 5th day and he was 93 and he was accompanied by his son, a youthful 72 same as me. Clarence said he had been riding Ragbrai since he was 78 and took up cycling in his 70s and he was camping and doing the whole week. I wondered if Clarence might have been interviewed and if his story might have been published? I also heard Anna from Washingtonville, Iowa was riding again this year … age 92 I think. I met Anna on RAGBRAI when she was only 88 but have not run across her the last couple of years. “Farmer John” was another Iowan I met several years back … also from Iowa … and he was on his 25th consecutive RAGBRAI at the time. Meet a lot of interesting people in and from Iowa on this annual event … my 16th consecutive ride and it would be nice to hear more about other participants on the ride, where they are from and why they ride this event.

The Register did a story on her not to long ago, not doing RAGBRAI but planned on doing a birthday ride of 92 miles, wish i could find the link.

I’ve done 37 now. finally got into all 99 counties a couple of years ago with the ending in Lansing. That was my goal, check off all 99. Now I see 7 where I haven’t had a overnight, or end town. 4 are south so doubt any of those will happen next year. 1 central so maybe RAGBRAI 50?, 2 farther north, hoping for one or both next year. So at least 3 more years, right?

I think you’re referring to Lucy from Washington, Iowa. The article about her 92 mile ride can be found at the

“Lucy” is correct … memories get muddled with names sometimes … thanks for the tip.

Clarence was interviewed this week on Just Go Bike podcast. If you haven’t heard it yet, I highly recommend everyone give it a listen. He is just incredible, and such a nice man!
