RAGBRAI LI Route Announced on Jan. 27!

Day 3 Lake View to Webster City

think we will go through Lehigh? there’s a nice climb back up from the Des Moines River. If we do careful on that big downhill into town, turns at the bottom and you are right in “downtown”.

If they take us on D46 only 3 towns and Lehigh could be the last town out unless they take the route up to Duncombe but then it’s on old highway 20 which is still pretty busy. Don’t think the hill out of Lehigh is quite as long as Twister last year but you have no run at it. 90 degree turn downtown to cross the river then a bend in the road and up. unless there is still a bar on that side of the river yet, then you have 1 more stop.

Lehigh had mud volleyball in Slabtown for us last time through.  No bar in Slabtown which is on the other side of the river.   They also had a t-shirt for you if you could ride your bike up School House Hill……plenty steep….no shirt for me.

Callender looks like the only choice for a new town for me that day. Oh, maybe Lytton.

Loop day and they are throwing some hill at you. Twice down and up out of the DM River Valley. Then down into Lehigh and back up after rejoining the route

I’ll be stopping by the cemetery in Gowrie to find a long-lost friend who’s funeral I was not able to attend many years ago. RIP Rick :(

My maternal grandparents and some other relatives are buried in Gowrie. I’ll be swinging by the Lost Grove Cemetery just west of there to visit my father’s grave. Hard to believe it’ll be a year on March 17th since he died.

How big are the hills with the loop? I’m gonna have a hard time training for hills (don’t care if I have to walk up a few at least I’m still moving forward or is that upward). I was considering doing the loop but if they are huge hills I might have to pass. As it is I’m not sure I’ll be in shape to do the loop.

It’s already an 81 mile day, with only 1724 feet of climbing and that’s pretty flat. I’m guessing the loop is also close to flat. However, since I’m from Kentucky and just finding my way to Iowa is a chore, I could be wrong!!!!!

The loop is not flat. 2 hills out of the DM River valley. Think Twister outside of Boone. Then there is another like I coming out of Leihigh. Don’t know if Geobike has the profileup yet.

I see Rick Pearson’s father died 3 days ago. Rick died tragically in an auto mishap just two years out of high school, 1973.

According to Map My Ride, the loop has a total climb of 361 feet. The two big climbs are 108 ft. and 161 ft. My usual disclaimer from this Kentucky boy!!!!

Depending on the length of the hill, those could be pretty steep. Any idea of the distance each hill lasts?

two are kind of long and turn so they hide the crest and its flat at the bottom so no big mo to carry onto it, thats before Stratford, the other is pretty straight down and up. I would guess all 4 that day are in 1/2 to 1 mile range, the longest into Stratford, then Lehigh, Dayton, Brushy Creek.
