The Register's Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa

Day 7 Anamosa to Clinton

Not a real fan of these long last days, Maquoketa would have made a good last night. Suppose we go south of it E45 and 136 into Clinton?

Anamosa to Maquoketa on 64 them Delmar on Y60 to 136 to Clinton. That is 69 miles. Any other route is much greater. Thats a flat route. A nice down hill into Charlotte. The climb out of Goose Lake is not that bad. 136 is on a ridge top with gorgeous views. The downhill into Clinton is long and fast.

Tony I hope you are correct and the ride enters the north end of Clinton (formerly Lyons Iowa) on 136. But the four previous times the ride has ended in Clinton the route into town has always been on F12. So with history as guide I predict at Charlotte the ride will go south on Z24 to Elvira and then east on F12.

Again I hope I am wrong and you are correct because I grew up in Lyons and have always wanted the ride to enter town on Main Street. Time will tell.

There’s always “Plan B” — Cedar Rapids to Anamosa via the announced route, and then continue on to Maquoketa or (once we see the actual route) one of the other towns between Anamosa and Clinton such as Oxford Junction. Means you would miss out on the Anamosa overnight action, but would make for a shorter Saturday.

I just ran the mileage at Bikely.com and I think a possible route into Clinton could be Anamosa to Wyoming to Oxford Junction to Lost Nation to Welton to Elvira to Clinton. Comes out at almost exactly 69 miles

Elvira is a neat town name…so is Beebeetown in my old home county.  Any other town names out there that are unique???

There was an article in local newspaper in northern Iowa (near where my father grew up) The head line included 2 unique Iowa town names.

It read  “Manly man marries Fertile woman” Manly is about 12 miles east of Fertile.

Kinda partial to “Tara” which is just west of 4Dodge in Webster County.   I like the movie.

I remember the wedding announcement. LOL. I believe it was published in the Mason City Globe Gazette, circa 1972

Mississippi River at Clinton

It depends on how they route the vehicles. If the vehicle route is on 64, 61 and 136, the bikes would go through Morley, Olin, Hale, Oxford Junction, Lost Nation, Welton and Elvira. That’s somewhat hilly through the Wapsie valley, but it does maximize the towns (all of them small). Elvira, such as it is (there’s not much there), has been a popular RAGBRAI stop in the past. They’re also used to hosting TOMRV.

If the vehicle route is down to Highway 30 at Mechanicsville and then directly to Clinton, it would free up 64 and 136. That’s my preferred bike route from Anamosa to Clinton; Tony’s right that it’s a wonderful ridge ride from Goose Lake. It’s also one of the nicer ways to go the other way, as the climb up from the Mississippi is not too steep.

Mich isn’t from Chicago, therefore, he can only vote once.

I wonder if the longer last day will help the end town (Clinton) gain some overnight tourism? If people know it’s a 69 mile day they might just figure on spending the night in Clinton and heading out the next morning fresh.
I’m not suggesting RAGBRAI intentionally does that, but I would think it might help the end towns a little bit.

I don’t think Maquoketa is on the route. The road through Oxford Junction is new pavement almost to Hwy61. If we cross 61 to Delmar, traffic wouldn’t have to be stopped.
