I was perusing the host city websites. In particular, Altoona’s caught my attention. Here’s the dumb nubee question. On the Altoona site they talk about purchasing a $15 tshirt or paying $20 to get into Grand Funk. Is this for people without a wristband? Aren’t concerts free for riders?

Yes. If you have your wrist band on, you are in.
HI !!Someone with more experience should answer but I think the wristband gets you into the Bud Tent entertainment free but Altoona is going to be a bigger concert so riders will most likely have to pay at a discounted rate. I remember paying a lesser amount to get into the Styx concert a few years ago in Ames.I was thinking of laying low that night, when a community invites the entire DSM Metro area to something you get a lot of townies with a lot of energy & a lot of crap can get started. I think RAGBRAI’ers take a lot of blame for destruction that really is caused by locals or drive-in people.. Anyway, I haven’t looked into my packet yet, perhaps info in there on your discount ? Otherwise I know you go to the Register trailer each evening to get a paper for the upcoming overnight town to tell you everything going on for planning purposes. *someone correct me if I am wrong here.
Grand Funk free to registered riders with their band. $20 at the door or $15 if you but their shirt ahead of time. GF plays at 8:00, other bands at 6:00 and 10:00. The shirt also gets you 1/2 price at Asventureland that day. I evpect a whole lot of locals and day riders that day. 20,000 on the road? maybe.
From Altoona’s website:
“Your Altoona RAGBRAI community t-shirt is your ticket to the event. For $15 you receive admission to the beverage garden with all three bands (a $20 value!!), plus half off an admission to Adventureland on July 27 and many other community specials and offers.”

Which is the cause of my confusion, Mich. Wristbands get me in or not? I initially assumed that the shirt sales (and the language on Altoona’s website) was geared more for non RAG riders. But on second look, it appears that even with a RAG wristband, it’s gonna cost me a $15 tshirt, or $20 at the gate.
I’m thouroughly confused. Any official RAGBRAI clarification?
I’m confusted now too!
From my past experience the Altoona website is talking to people who are non-riders and have no RAGBRAI wristband. These would primarily be locals who come out to enjoy the RAG spirit without riding a bike or to bandits who refuse to pay their registration fees for their participation in RAGBRAI. I would bet that any RAG participant (rider, driver or non-rider with a respective wristband) will be able to get in without paying anything. Hope so, anyway. Cheers.
I posted that question to them on their Facebook page after they advertised the t-shirt deal and they (RB Altoona) definitely confirmed that your wristband will get you in free of charge.
Confusion ended, thanks!!!!
Styx in Ames was free to anyone wearing the t-shirt regardless of whether they registered or not…. Wirstbands did not get you any deals for the show…. They upped the price of the shirt a few bucks and threw in the free admission kind of last minute…. The extra money from the new t-shirt price went towards flood relief…. In the OTHER spirit of RAGBRAI…. Using procedds for the good of the communities in Iowa….
Sorry I brought Styx into the “mix ” of confusion. I am reminded of a favorite movie quote, “I never look back darling, it detracts from the now.” I should have listened..
It’s all good…. You gave me the chance to remind the virgins about the importance of RAGBRAI giving back to the communities….
THAT’S another great reason to buy a wristband.. OH… but that is another post. (tee hee… sorry I couldn’t resist) Maybe I will see you out there,
Toad!
Just keep an eye open for wristband #143194!!!!
