Gravel loop

How rough is the gravel loop surface? I have 29mm road tires that are fine on the unpaved roads I often use in upstate New York. Not sure how well they would take heavily rutted surfaces or any deep gravel.

You will probably be just fine. It won’t be rutted. There is never a guarantee on gravel conditions in Iowa. It might be fresh rock, it might be freshly graded or it might not. It might even be what is referred to as ‘hero gravel’ where all the rock has been pushed away and what is left is a very hard, very fast surface. All of this is subject to change up until the ride.

My recommendation is 28mm or larger if your bike will take them. Never heard of 29s but they’ll be fine!

The justgobike.net podcast titled “2018 RAGBRAI Route Inspection Pre-Ride Episodes” from Day 1 gives some insight to the gravel conditions and hills on this optional loop.

Good suggestion, I am listening to it right now! I assume the other episodes from the pre-ride are also worth a listen.
